Higher Education System in Britain

The level of education in the UK is world known. That’s why many people come there to get their first degree or maybe to get a higher one. But most of people face the difficulty in the way of misunderstanding of this or that degree, as British classification differs from those possessed by other countries.

First of all find out if your course is research or taught, it will help you to start your qualification. This will predetermine your relations with the university and its tutors. If you choose taught courses you will be spending most of the time in campus, there won’t be many hours of contact. To compare post and undergraduate levels in the first type of qualification you will have less contact hours, but will have to attend lectures and classes. If your qualification is science be ready to spend your time in the lab.

Every term taught courses are divided into modules. There is a wide selection of them, and students usually choose the three the most interesting for them. Then they are placed to a particular class with a particular tutor. From 3 up to 10 students make a seminar group. On the seminars the attention is paid to students’ personal learning. Seminars are held in the form of discussion forum. The tutor’s task is not to directly conduct the class, but to facilitate. That’s why students have to prepare some presentations for the seminars. You will also have on-on-one sessions with the tutor. He or she will recommend some books that may be useful while making some work. Benefit from communicating with other students. Attending various lectures may also be interesting.

For taught courses each terms ends with the module assessment. It may be presented in the form of either exam or essay. The final term ends with dissertation (you’ll have several guidance sessions).
