British research courses
Research courses demand more your personal work, but it doesn’t mean that support is unavailable. Being a research student you will use the facilities of the campus, you will have an appointed tutor, who will guide you and assist from time to time. You may have a taught element in the first year of study.
Postgraduate research courses take 3 or 4 years, having a high qualification level. At the end of the course you will have to present their dissertation. Your research work should be original and innovative.
There are many research programs. One of the most popular is Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Also you may take the course to get a degree of Doctor of Law, or Science, or Music.
The quantity of terms varies depending on the particular universities. In general there are 2 or 3 terms per year. Usually the studying in the UK begins in September. If you are taking any kind of research course, your work can be started whenever you would like during the academic term. Though many students prefer to start in September anyway.
No matter whether you are research student or not you are welcome to use all the possible resources at the university. So international students will easily cope with their work. The formats of the presentation may differ much in the British Universities. That is why orientation sessions are made for the internationals. There are study skills classes created specially for foreign students. Contact the International Office of the University chosen by you and find some extra-classes for you.
Be ready to face a totally different learning culture. Many of us imagine Britain as some conservative country, and it is. But the relations between students and tutors are surprisingly informal. The best advantage of the British tutorial system is the students’ motivation to debate openly and freely. Developing your own ideas is what the tutors expect from you!
